Weight Loss Injection Prescribing Policy

We appreciate that a number of patients may find Wegovy® (semaglutide) beneficial in managing their condition and we understand their concerns regarding the financial implications of obtaining this treatment privately.

Previously, the relevant NICE guidance and local prescribing arrangements did not permit NHS prescribing or shared-care management of GLP-1 medications in your clinical circumstances.

However, NICE published updated guidance (TA1152) on 7 May 2026. Following this update, Somerset Integrated Care Board (ICB) and local GP practices, including our own, are currently reviewing how this guidance will be implemented locally. This includes consideration of prescribing responsibilities, patient eligibility criteria, and the arrangements required for ongoing monitoring and follow-up.

Until these local arrangements have been agreed, we are unable to initiate NHS prescribing of Wegovy for this indication.

Once Somerset ICB and local practices have reached a consensus regarding the implementation of the updated NICE guidance, we will review eligible patients in accordance with the agreed pathway.
